Westland Books — In Short

Westland Books is one of India's most storied and widely-read publishing houses — the publisher behind some of the country's biggest commercial fiction and non-fiction bestsellers. Home to Amish Tripathi, Devdutt Pattanaik, Chetan Bhagat, Rujuta Diwekar, Anand Neelakantan, and dozens of other beloved Indian authors, Westland built a reputation as a publisher with its finger on the pulse of mass Indian readership. After a turbulent period that saw its closure as an Amazon company in March 2022, the core Westland team was revived under Pratilipi/Nasadiya Technologies — continuing the same editorial vision with a new digital-first backing.

What Westland Books is Known For (In Practice)

Publisher of India's mythology fiction wave — Amish Tripathi's Shiva Trilogy, one of India's all-time bestselling fiction series, was a Westland book
Home to mass-market non-fiction — Rujuta Diwekar's nutrition books, Devdutt Pattanaik's mythology titles, and business books by Rashmi Bansal all found their largest readership through Westland
Consistently in India's bestseller charts — Since Nielsen started tracking Indian booksales, Westland titles were a regular fixture in the national top 10 and top 50
Award-winning literary imprints — The Context imprint won the JCB Prize for Literature 2021 for Delhi: A Soliloquy by Manav Kaul
Champion of debut and non-celebrity authors — Westland was widely respected for taking risks on first-time authors who went on to build large readerships
Deep South Indian publishing roots — Originally founded in Chennai in 1962, with strong links to Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam literary culture through imprints like EastWest and Eka
💡 Westland's back catalogue — especially titles by Amish Tripathi, Devdutt Pattanaik, Chetan Bhagat, Rujuta Diwekar, and Anand Neelakantan — remains among the most actively sought and sold in India's book ecosystem.

Westland Books — A Brief History

Few Indian publishers have had a more eventful journey than Westland. Here is the full arc, from its founding to its revival:

1962
Founded by the Padmanabhan family in Chennai as East West Books — one of India's early English-language trade publishers, with deep roots in South Indian literary culture.
2008
Acquired by Trent Limited (the Tata Group's retail arm), which merged EastWest Books and Westland Books into a single entity — renaming it Westland Books. The publisher shifted from distribution-focused to a fully trade publishing house, rapidly becoming one of India's top three English-language publishers.
2010–2016
Under CEO Gautam Padmanabhan (son of founder K.S. Padmanabhan) and publisher Karthika VK, Westland established itself as India's fastest-growing publishing house. The Shiva Trilogy by Amish Tripathi became a defining commercial success, helping cement Westland's position at the top of Indian bestseller charts.
2016–2017
Amazon first acquired a 26% stake in Westland (February 2016), then proceeded to acquire the company fully (November 2016), completing the takeover in 2017. Amazon also launched Context — a literary fiction and narrative non-fiction imprint — in 2018, under Westland's umbrella.
2022 (February)
Amazon announced the abrupt closure of Westland Books, citing a "thorough review." The decision stunned India's literary world — Westland was at the time one of the country's three largest trade publishers, with an annual turnover of approximately ₹30 crore. All author contracts ended on 31 March 2022.
2022 (April onwards)
The former Westland team — including Karthika VK, Gautam Padmanabhan, and other editorial leaders — joined forces with Pratilipi (owned by Bengaluru-based Nasadiya Technologies), India's largest digital storytelling platform. Westland Books was effectively revived under this new partnership, continuing to publish under the Westland name and its existing imprints.
2023 Onwards
The revived Westland launched Pratilipi Paperbacks — a new language imprint publishing popular fiction in Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil sourced from Pratilipi's nine-lakh-strong writer community. Westland continues to publish English-language trade titles under its original imprints.

Amazon cited a "thorough review" without specifying reasons. Industry analysis pointed to declining sales from major Westland authors like Amish Tripathi and Chetan Bhagat whose readership had shifted — combined with large advance payments that were difficult to recoup. The decision was widely condemned by India's literary community.
Westland's main imprints include Westland (flagship trade), Context (literary fiction and narrative non-fiction), Tranquebar Press (literary publishing), East West Books (South Indian heritage), Red Panda (children's and YA), Ekada/Eka (Indian language titles and translations), Pratilipi Paperbacks (popular regional fiction in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil), and Queer Directions (LGBTQ+ storytelling).
