1962
Founded by the Padmanabhan family in Chennai as East West Books — one of India's early English-language trade publishers, with deep roots in South Indian literary culture.
2008
Acquired by Trent Limited (the Tata Group's retail arm), which merged EastWest Books and Westland Books into a single entity — renaming it Westland Books. The publisher shifted from distribution-focused to a fully trade publishing house, rapidly becoming one of India's top three English-language publishers.
2010–2016
Under CEO Gautam Padmanabhan (son of founder K.S. Padmanabhan) and publisher Karthika VK, Westland established itself as India's fastest-growing publishing house. The Shiva Trilogy by Amish Tripathi became a defining commercial success, helping cement Westland's position at the top of Indian bestseller charts.
2016–2017
Amazon first acquired a 26% stake in Westland (February 2016), then proceeded to acquire the company fully (November 2016), completing the takeover in 2017. Amazon also launched Context — a literary fiction and narrative non-fiction imprint — in 2018, under Westland's umbrella.
2022 (February)
Amazon announced the abrupt closure of Westland Books, citing a "thorough review." 2022 (April onwards)
The former Westland team — including Karthika VK, Gautam Padmanabhan, and other editorial leaders — joined forces with Pratilipi (owned by Bengaluru-based Nasadiya Technologies), India's largest digital storytelling platform.
